Early life and first steps in poker
Chidwick was born in Deal, a town on the Kent coast, in May 1989, and has played poker since he was 18. PokerNews describes him as a private person, and little has been published about his early years or his life away from the tables. He is married to Marine, whom he met in the late 2010s. [1]
He started out online, mostly under the name “Stevie444”, and his recorded winnings on PokerStars alone come to almost $3.9 million, although his last recorded result there dates from September 2020. According to PokerNews, in 2008, when he was not yet old enough to play in Las Vegas, he won more than 100 online packages to the $10,000 WSOP Main Event. [1]
Beginning on the live circuit
His first notable live result came in 2008, when he won a $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas for $88,760. On his second visit to the World Series of Poker, in 2011, he finished fourth in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em Championship for $198,927. In 2012 he was sixth in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for $253,497 and third in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event, and in 2013 he finished fourth in the $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed event for $353,780. [1]
Also in 2013, he finished third in the €5,300 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event for €378,000. From then on he became a regular in high roller and super high roller events around the world. PokerNews reports that since 2013 he has won at least $1 million in every calendar year, with a best year of $13,528,992. [1]
His first seven-figure score came in March 2018 at the Super High Roller Bowl in Macau, worth the equivalent of $1,298,521. A month later, at the partypoker MILLIONS Barcelona festival, he finished second in the €101,000 Super High Roller for €1,100,000 and third in the €10,300 Main Event for €1,000,000, two results within two days. [1]
Playing style
Most of Chidwick’s results come in No-Limit Hold’em, but he also has titles in Pot-Limit Omaha and Short Deck, and deep runs in mixed games and Stud. [1][3] In a Card Player survey published with his 2019 Player of the Year award, 24 of the 61 players questioned named him the best player in the world; the next candidate received 7 votes. [6]
Chidwick has linked his progress to solver software: “I was an early adopter of those tools and immediately saw the huge potential they offered for the development of a theoretical understanding of the game.” He has also explained his habit of watching opponents closely when the action is on them, which PokerNews calls possibly the scariest stare in poker: “It was never intended to intimidate, just to have as much information as possible on which to base each decision.” [8][1]
On his results in Pot-Limit Omaha tournaments, he told PokerNews in 2024 that he tries to combine “an okay foundation in the theory of PLO” with “very strong tournament fundamentals”. [4]
