Early life: from tennis to poker

Before poker, Antonius was a promising tennis player in Finland. Serious back injuries as a teenager and young adult ended those plans, and during his recovery he started playing poker with friends for $50 stakes. At 18 he moved his game to local casinos. In the same years he worked as a model, a waiter, a door-to-door salesman and a tennis coach, before committing to poker full time. [1]

He is married to Maya Geller, also a professional poker player, and lives in Monaco. [1]

Breakthrough on the European Poker Tour

His first major title came in 2005, when Antonius won the EPT Baden Main Event for €288,180. [1] In December of the same year he reached heads-up in the World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic, finishing second to Rehne Pedersen for $1,046,470, in a field whose total prize pool was $8,075,250. [9]

At the same time he was building his reputation in high-stakes online cash games, which grew during the Full Tilt Poker era. [1]

Playing style

Antonius is best known as a cash game player. His best-known pots were played in No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha. His reputation rests on deep-stacked, high-pressure play against the strongest opponents of his time, including Tom Dwan, Viktor Blom and Eric Persson. When he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said: “In the modern era of poker, few have been as bold and fearless as Patrik Antonius.” [3]
