A Little Bit of History
There are several theories about the origin of poker. One theory suggests that poker was derived from a French game called “poque,” which was played in the 16th century. Another theory suggests that poker was developed from a German game called “poch,” which was popular in the 18th century.
Despite these theories, it is generally accepted that poker as we know it today was developed in the United States in the early 19th century. The game was likely influenced by several other card games, such as the English game of “brag” and the French game of “brelan.”
Poker was originally played with a deck of 20 cards, with players betting on the strength of their hand. As the game gained popularity, it was played with a standard deck of 52 cards, and the rules and structure of the game were refined and standardized.
Poker tournaments have been held since the early days of the game, but the first recorded poker tournament was held in Robstown, Texas in 1970 (picture). The tournament was won by Johnny Moss, one of the most accomplished players of all time.
