Phil Hellmuth is an American professional poker player who holds the record for World Series of Poker bracelets, with 17. He won the WSOP Main Event in 1989 at the age of 24 and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2007. [2] Known as “The Poker Brat” for his outbursts at the table, he is the only player to have won a WSOP bracelet in every decade from the 1980s to the 2020s. [1]

Early life in Madison
Hellmuth was born on July 16, 1964, in Madison, Wisconsin. [2] His father, Phil Hellmuth Sr., held a law degree from Marquette University, where he met his wife Lynn, as well as a PhD and an MBA, and spent his whole career at the University of Wisconsin’s Letters and Science department. [4] In his autobiography, Hellmuth describes discovering poker at the family cabin on Sunday Lake in Minocqua, Wisconsin, and a sign his mother taped to the bathroom mirror that read “You are what you think; You become what you think; What you think becomes reality.” [14]
He attended Madison West High School and then the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which he left after three years to play poker full time, moving to Las Vegas. [1] In Poker Brat he recalls how hard that decision was for his father: “I was the son who had to go to college, who had to get good grades.” [4] Phil Hellmuth Sr. died in September 2026 after a nine-month battle with cancer. Hellmuth lives in Palo Alto with his wife, Katherine (Kathy) Sanborn, a psychiatrist at Stanford University. The couple have two sons, Phillip III and Nicholas. [1]
Beginning in poker and the 1989 Main Event
Hellmuth played his first World Series of Poker in May 1988, aged 23. [14] A year later his father, who had never played poker, chose to join him at the 1989 WSOP as a vacation. [4]
The 1989 Main Event drew 178 players, and two-time defending champion Johnny Chan was the favorite at the final table. Hellmuth reached heads-up against Chan and won the title on a hand where his pocket nines held against Chan’s ace-seven. He took home $755,000 and became the youngest Main Event champion at the time, a record that stood for 19 years until Peter Eastgate won in 2008. Within seconds of the last card, Hellmuth went looking for his father and hugged him by the table. [3]
Playing style
According to WSOP.com, his nickname comes from a temper “nearly as famous as his poker acumen” and a tendency to curse over bad beats and criticize opponents. [2] PokerNews describes him as a polarizing figure because of his trash talk, his self-belief and an “often unorthodox playing style”. [1] In 2021 the same site called him a “perennial underdog” in the eyes of many professionals because his approach differs from the solver-based (GTO) style that dominates today, and noted that one of his strengths is that he is very hard to bust and rarely loses a big pot at showdown without a bad beat. [11][12] Most of his bracelets came in Texas Hold’em, but he has also won in Razz and No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw. [2]

In 1993 he won three bracelets on three consecutive days, becoming only the second player to win three at a single series after Walter “Puggy” Pearson in 1973. His 10th bracelet in 2006 tied him with Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson, and his 11th in 2007 gave him the record on his own. In 2012 he won his first bracelet outside hold’em, in Razz, and then became the first player to win both the WSOP Main Event and the WSOP Europe Main Event. [1] He won that Europe Main Event against a field of 420, beating Sergii Baranov heads-up. [6]
His 17th bracelet came at the 2023 WSOP in the $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty, where 642 entries built a $4,044,600 prize pool. Hellmuth recovered from a short stack, eliminated Phil Ivey in sixth place and beat Justin Zaki heads-up for $803,818 plus bounties. [7]
Since 2023: the chase for an 18th bracelet
Hellmuth has not won a bracelet since 2023. His WSOP.com results for 2024, 2025 and 2026 show no further wins, and the bracelet count stood at 17 on October 5, 2026. [2] He came closest on the final day of the 2026 WSOP, when he took the chip lead into the final table of the $5,000 8-Handed No-Limit Hold’em event (884 entries) and lost heads-up to Darren Rabinowitz, finishing second for $464,286. [2][8] In 2025 his best WSOP result was third place in a $2,500 mixed Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo event, worth $112,360. [1]

Hellmuth won the first NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship in 2005, beating Chris Ferguson in a best-of-three final. [9] He reached the final again in 2013 and lost to Mike Matusow. [10] He has not won a World Poker Tour title: PokerNews counts almost 20 WPT cashes and five final tables, and his best finish is second place at the 2017 WPT Legends of Poker, where he lost heads-up to Artur Papazyan. Poker Hall of Fame, 2007
Hellmuth was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2007 together with Barbara Enright, when he held 11 bracelets. Then WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said: “Barbara and Phil clearly meet these high standards, and we are delighted to welcome them into the Hall of Fame as the Class of 2007.” [5]
High Stakes Duel and TV
On PokerGO’s High Stakes Duel, a heads-up format in which the stakes double every round, Hellmuth swept Antonio Esfandiari in three matches and then Daniel Negreanu in three more, with buy-ins of $50,000, $100,000 and $200,000 in April, May and June 2021. He took $350,000 net from each opponent. [11]
In the third season he beat Nick Wright in Round 1. In August 2021 Tom Dwan ended his 7-0 run after a six-hour match, cracking his pocket aces as he had in the first round of the 2008 National Heads-Up Championship, when Hellmuth told the then 22-year-old: “We’ll see if you’re even around in five years.” [12] Hellmuth won the rematch in January 2022 for $400,000.
