Early life and first results in Madrid

Mateos is from Madrid and now lives in London. [1] His first recorded live cashes came in Madrid in late 2012. [1] In January 2013 he won the Main Event of the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour stop at Gran Casino Madrid, a €1,000 + €100 tournament that drew 632 players from 28 countries. After a three-way deal he took €103,000. [4] PokerNews later noted that he was 18 at the time. [5]

Breakthrough: WSOP Europe 2013 and EPT Grand Final 2015

Later in 2013, aged 19, Mateos won the WSOP Europe Main Event, the last bracelet event of that season. He beat Fabrice Soulier heads-up after a match of nearly five hours and won €1,000,000; Soulier received €610,000. [3] The event had 375 entries. [1] Because he was under 21, he could not yet play the WSOP in Las Vegas, which he mentioned after the win. [3]

In May 2015, aged 20, he won the EPT Grand Final Main Event in Monte Carlo for €1,082,000, beating Muhyedine Fares heads-up. He was the first Spanish winner after 11 seasons and 105 EPT events. On the way, during four-handed play, he moved all in on the river with no made hand and Johnny Lodden folded the better hand, one of the best-remembered moments of that final table. [5]

Playing style

Mateos plays almost exclusively No-Limit Hold’em tournaments, with a focus on high roller and super high roller events. In 2018 PokerNews wrote that he had a reputation as one of the hardest workers in the game when it comes to studying, and he has said that coaching friends made him study even harder. [17] He is known for his record in heads-up play: PokerNews counts him as 6-0 in WSOP heads-up matches for a bracelet. [15] In the same 2026 article, PokerNews editor Eliot Thomas wrote: “With respect to my colleagues, if you don’t have Mateos as the best tournament player in the world right now, you’re just wrong.” [15]

Online, he plays under the screen name “Amadi_017” and has won SCOOP and WCOOP titles on PokerStars. [1] On March 30, 2021 he won the 42nd edition of the GGPoker Super MILLION$, a $10,300 tournament, for $428,624. [16]
