Film career
Maguire was born in Santa Monica, California. His film roles in the late 1990s included Pleasantville (1998) and The Cider House Rules (1999), and he played the title role in Spider-Man (2002) and its sequels, including Spider-Man 3 (2007). He also starred in Seabiscuit (2003), The Great Gatsby (2013) and Pawn Sacrifice (2015). On Wednesday, October 27, 2004, Maguire won Phil Hellmuth’s Poker Invitational at Hollywood Park Casino, an event in the casino’s National Championship of Poker series. The $2,000 buy-in tournament drew 123 players for a prize pool of $246,000 and lasted 13 hours; Maguire took the $95,480 first prize. PokerNews reported it as his first major poker tournament win. The Hollywood high-stakes game
Much of Maguire’s reputation at the table comes from private cash games rather than tournaments. In 2011 ABC News wrote that “Tobey Maguire knows how to hold ’em”, that he “frequently came out on top” in a high-stakes Hollywood game often called “Tobey’s Game”, and that Phil Hellmuth, who has played with him, had estimated his home-game winnings at more than $10 million. The game became widely known through Molly Bloom, who organized it.
