Early life: chess, cards and sports betting

In a post on the partypoker blog, quoted by GipsyTeam, Badziakouski wrote that he started learning chess at 5 and by the age of 10 was spending hours playing card games. At 12 he tried sports betting, which he described as his main interest for the next 4 years, until he found poker. “Since I was a child, my greatest passions have been intellectual rivalry and games, so poker was the ideal blend of both,” he wrote. [4]

His first contact with poker came at 16, when he watched episodes of the WSOP Main Event and decided he wanted to play it one day. Working out that he would only turn 21 in 2013, he chose the screen name “fish2013”. [4]

Beginning in poker

His early live results came close to home: PokerNews records nine cashes between March 2010 and March 2013, all of them in Ukraine. From May 2015 he began travelling to tournaments across Europe and beyond. [1] When he joined Team partypoker in January 2019, RakeRace described him as having been “one of the most feared online cash game specialists for years” before he moved to the live tournament circuit. [11]

His first six-figure score came in May 2016: €210,530 for sixth place in the €50,000 Super High Roller at EPT Monte Carlo. Later he finished second in the €100,000 Monte-Carlo One Drop Extravaganza for €501,800, and in 2017 he was third in the €111,111 High Roller for One Drop at WSOP Europe for more than €1.5 million. [1]

Playing style

Nearly all of his biggest results are in No-Limit Hold’em, though he has also reached final tables in Short Deck, including second place in the $10,000 Short Deck Championship of the 2020 WSOP Online series for $210,249. [1]

After his 2018 win in Jeju, PokerNews wrote about “his typical robotic approach”, said he “doesn’t feel the pressure in big moments” and noted that he spent the breaks studying previous hands. The same report described his reputation in high roller circles for his expertise in no-limit hold’em technicalities. [5] In his own explanations he tends to separate results from decisions and to credit luck: after the Big One for One Drop he told WPT reporters that he “got lucky in a couple of big coolers”. [5][7]

Greatest achievements

Back-to-back Triton Main Events in 2018

In May 2018 Badziakouski won the HK$1,000,000 Triton Super High Roller Series Main Event in Montenegro for $2,499,184. A week later he finished fourth in the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl in Las Vegas for $1,600,000. [1] In Jeju, South Korea, he then won the HK$2,000,000 Triton Main Event, topping a field of 55 entries for HK$41,250,000, more than $5.2 million. Chan Wai Leong finished second. A key moment came when Badziakouski used all of his time extensions before calling Chan’s river shove with ace-queen; Chan was bluffing, and the call doubled him up. [5] In August 2018 he added the €100,000 EPT Barcelona Super High Roller for €1,650,300. [1]

The 2021 WSOP bracelet

Event #85 of the 2021 World Series of Poker, a $50,000 High Roller, drew 113 entries and a prize pool of $5,409,875. Badziakouski beat Ren Lin heads-up for $1,462,043 and his first gold bracelet. On the final hand Lin moved all in with king-seven and Badziakouski called with ace-five; both players made two pair on an eight-nine-deuce-eight-nine board, and his ace kicker played. PokerNews noted it was his eighth seven-figure score. [6] “Honestly, the bracelet is not as important for me as it is for many other players,” he said afterwards. [6]

The 2023 WPT Big One for One Drop

In December 2023 the World Poker Tour held a $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop at Wynn Las Vegas during its World Championship festival. It drew 17 entries, and $60,000 from each buy-in went to the One Drop foundation. [7] Mario Mosboeck started heads-up with nearly a 2-1 chip lead, but Badziakouski won the final hand with ace-nine against king-jack. He took $7,114,500, ahead of Mosboeck ($4,663,950), Dan Smith ($2,806,750) and Isaac Haxton ($1,224,800). [8] Card Player reported that the win lifted his career earnings to just shy of $53.3 million. [7]
