Early life and online career

Colman was born on July 11, 1990, and comes from Holden, Massachusetts. [1] He built his reputation online under the screen names “mrGR33N13” and “riyyc225”, mainly in high-limit hyper-turbo sit-and-gos. [1] Card Player describes him as a respected heads-up sit-n-go specialist who was staked and coached by Olivier Busquet after Colman correctly read Busquet’s own online play. In 2013 he became the first hyper-turbo sit-n-go player to win more than $1,000,000 online in a calendar year. [7] PokerNews also described him as a WCOOP Heads-Up champion. [5]

His first live tournament cash came in 2008, a fourth place in the Heartland Poker Tour $5,000 Verona Main Event for $23,275. Over the next years his live results were modest, including $229,344 in 2011 and $194,000 in 2013, and he entered 2014 with $504,699 in lifetime tournament earnings. [1]

Playing style

Colman’s background is in short-handed and heads-up No-Limit Hold’em, played at speed online. [1][7] That experience showed in his live wins: at the 2014 EPT Grand Final he turned a large chip deficit against Dan Cates into victory through what PokerNews called “patient play”, and the heads-up match lasted 23 hands. [5] After the One Drop final, Daniel Negreanu said of him: “Really he’s a class act, a good kid and I really like the way he plays.” [4]

Greatest achievements

The 2014 season

In April 2014 Colman won the €100,000 Super High Roller at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. The event drew 62 entries (50 unique players and 12 re-entries) for a prize pool of €6,015,240; Colman was the only player to buy in three times, a total of €300,000, and after a three-handed deal he took €1,539,300. [5]

At the 2014 WSOP he finished third in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship for $111,942 before winning the Big One for One Drop. [1] He then finished third in an Aria $100,000 Super High Roller for $796,821 and second in the EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller, which drew a record 77 entries; after a heads-up deal with Olivier Busquet he received €843,066. [1][8]

Weeks later he won the $5,300 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Main Event in Florida, which had a $10,000,000 guarantee and 1,499 entrants, for $1,446,710, with Mike Leah second. It was his third title, fourth seven-figure score and sixth final table of the year. [9] In October he won the £60,000 WPT Alpha8 London from 23 entries, beating Max Altergott heads-up for £600,000, a win that moved him past Erik Seidel and Phil Ivey on the all-time money list. [10] In November he added seventh place in the Asia Championship of Poker Super High Roller for $373,932. [1]

Card Player counted $22,319,279 in live tournament earnings for his 2014 season, more than $3 million above the previous single-year record, from nine final tables and four titles. He won the 2014 Card Player Player of the Year race with 5,498 points, ahead of Ami Barer (5,042) and Mike Leah (4,830). [7] He also finished first in the 2014 Global Poker Index Player of the Year standings with 4141.91 points, just ahead of Ole Schemion, and was named Player of the Year by BLUFF Magazine and ALL IN Magazine. [11][1]

The 2014 Big One for One Drop

The second edition of the $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop, WSOP Event #57, drew 42 entries and a prize pool of $37,333,338. [6][3] Colman, then 23, reached heads-up play against Daniel Negreanu. The match lasted 46 hands; on the last one Colman’s king-queen made a straight on the turn against Negreanu’s ace-four. Colman won $15,306,668, the largest score of his career, and Negreanu took $8,288,001. [3][4] Card Player called it the second-largest payout in tournament poker history at the time. Before the WSOP his WSOP earnings stood at $159,010. [4][1]

Colman declined interview requests after the win and posed only reluctantly for the winner’s photo. [6] He later explained his position in a post on the Two Plus Two forum (see “In his own words” below). [1]
