2nd Basque Country Poker Championship 2025 - World Poker Federation

On Sunday, December 7, the Basque Association of Oware and Strategic Games, poker section, held the II Basque Country Poker Championship 2025, marking another important step for the local poker community aligned with the World Poker Federation.

The event took place at the Almirante bar, in the San Ignacio neighborhood of Bilbao, bringing together a small but highly committed group of players. Organized as a non betting competition, the championship reflects a structured and competitive approach to poker, focused on strategy, consistency and sporting values.

Tournament format

Play began at 7:00 pm and continued until approximately 9:30 pm. The championship was divided into two one hour rounds, with two tables of four players each. The top two players from each table advanced based on performance, while the overall ranking was determined first by number of wins and then by total accumulated points across both rounds.

In the opening round, Gotzon Alonso and Egoitz Campo secured wins at their respective tables. Mikel Torde and Joseba Zubiaurre advanced as runners up. In the second round, Joseba Fernández delivered the strongest performance at his table, with Arrate Elorrieta finishing second with a solid score. At the decisive table, Egoitz led most of the match, but Gotzon took a decisive risk in the final hands, collecting a large pot and securing the championship.

Mikel Torde, champion of the first edition in 2024, finished this year in fifth place.

Looking ahead

Following this successful second edition, the Basque poker community plans to organize smaller tournaments throughout 2026 as preparation for the III Basque Country Poker Championship, scheduled for December next year.
