Collective effort by the World Poker Federation enshrines a sport that is now officially placed alongside chess and eSports
In a historic milestone for Poker , the IMSA (International Mind Sports Association) has officially recognized the sport as a mind sport. After two years as a provisional member, thanks to the endorsement obtained by the World Poker Federation, the sport has achieved the unprecedented status of permanent member.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held by the WPF at the WTC Sheraton in São Paulo – the same venue that is hosting the BSOP Millions 2024, the largest poker event in Latin America. Executives from world federations and IMSA were present at the event and gave their final opinion, after a meeting, which will change the status of poker globally.
Poker now joins other mind sports, such as chess and eSports , which are already recognized by the entity. These sports are called this way because, in addition to having several characteristics in common with traditional sports, they also require intellectual ability to compete and function as an activity that works the brain and logic, and involves concentration, reasoning and decision-making.
