Early life and first steps in poker

Holz was born in Saarbrücken, in western Germany. [3] He studied mathematics and, like many players of his generation, found poker at university through home games with friends. He later described feeling pressure from his family to “get a job” and live his life in a solid way, before poker took over. [13]

He made his name online under the screen name “CrownUpGuy”. [1] When he won his first bracelet in 2016, WSOP.com listed his residence as Vienna, Austria. [3]

Breakthrough: the 2014 WCOOP Main Event

Holz first came to wide attention in September 2014, when he won the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) $5,200 Main Event. The tournament had a $10 million guarantee and drew 2,142 players for a prize pool of $10,710,000. With six players left the finalists agreed a deal in which Holz, the chip leader, locked up $1.1 million, and he then won the title, reported as a $1.3 million score. [4]

At his first World Series of Poker in 2015 he finished third in the $10,000 Six-Handed Championship and 25th in the Main Event. [1] In November 2015 he began working with mental game coach Elliot Roe, a change he later described as a turning point. [10] In December 2015 he won the WPT $100,000 Alpha8 Las Vegas, outlasting 44 other entrants for $1,589,219, with Daniel Negreanu finishing third. [5]

खेल शैली

Holz is known above all as a नो-लिमिट होल्डम tournament specialist in the highest buy-in events. After his One Drop win, PokerNews wrote that he “might be widely considered one of the best, if not the very best, no-limit hold’em tournament players on the planet”, while noting that good fortune had also played a role in his results. [7] Holz himself credits the strength of the high roller fields: “From playing with them, they teach you. If you do not play well, they eat you alive.” [3]

[10] In the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl in Las Vegas he reached an all-German heads-up match against Rainer Kempe and finished second from a 49-player field for $3,500,000. [6]

In July he won his first WSOP bracelet in Event #67, the $111,111 High Roller for One Drop at the Rio in Las Vegas. The event drew 183 entrants and a prize pool of $19,316,565; Holz, then 22, beat Dan Smith heads-up and collected $4,981,775.
